Breaking Dawn - PG13 or Rated R?

For three movies the Twilight franchise has flirted with subject matter that would normally garner an R-rating. Blood-thirsty vampires, sharp-fanged werewolves, and teenage sexual awakening are all subjects that require a delicate touch to win a PG-13 from the MPAA.

Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg has batted down rumors that Breaking Dawn will be rated R, insisting that nothing is sacrificed in keeping it PG-13. (Kat - this I just have to see... just not seeing how it's possible!)

In the upcoming Breaking Dawn, the Twilight team faces it's trickiest challenge yet. The fourth book in the series takes all that mostly unspoken sexual tension and off-stage death and smashes it on the twin rocks of sex and gore.

While we know that Breaking Dawn's PG-13 rating is all but a foregone conclusion, here we take a look at the very- persuasive evidence that producers should think about making a mature-eyes-only Rated R tween movie... even if it only makes the unrated DVD release. In order to better illustrate these specific scenes which so far don't exist, we turn to the Internet with its happy abundance of Twilight-themed fan art. Enjoy!

1. Breaking More Than Just Dawn

In the Twilight films so far we've watched Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart do little more than play footsy while the sexual tension just builds and builds. After a total of more than six hours of nothing but playful hints of sexuality, the audience needs the honeymoon scene almost as much as Bella and Edward do. Of course if they did show it, it would be very controversial, and not just for Rob's blindingly white naked torso. (Kat - hey... we love that white torso!)

In the book, Bella describes the aftermath of the couple's first night together.

I stared at my naked body in the full-length mirror behind the door.

I'd definitely had worse. There was a faint shadow across one of my cheekbones, and my lips were a little swollen, but other than that, my face was fine. The rest of me was decorated with patches of blue and purple."
Ch. 5, pg. 75

Bella also woke up covered in down feathers because Edward "bit a pillow. Or two." Of course the second time the two experience physical love there's not so much bruising, but it would definitely take things to the next level to see Robert Pattinson do the damage described in Chapter Six. (Kat - you got THAT right!) After realizing her night gown has been torn to tatters, Bella assesses the rest of the damage.

"Were there any other casualties?" I asked timidly.

"I'll have to buy Esme a new bed frame," he confessed, glancing over his shoulder. I followed his gaze and was shocked to see that large chunks of wood had apparently been gouged from the left side of the headboard.

2. Li'l Killers

In Breaking Dawn, we're introduced to the epically creepy/ awesome concept of vampire toddlers running around annihilating villages thanks to their unchecked thirst for human blood. Bella even has a dream where one little vampire toddler with a cherubic face sits on top of a mound of bodies that includes all her closest friends and family.

If nothing else, can we please get these blood-guzzling tykes in the DVD extras? Carlisle describes them early on in the book.

"However, they could not be taught. They were frozen at whatever level of development they'd achieved before being bitten. Adorable two-year-olds with dimples and lisps that could destroy half a village in one of their tantrums. If they hungered, they fed, and no words of warning could restrain them. Humans saw them, stories circulated, fear spread like fire in dry brush..."
Ch. 2, pg. 34

3. The Birth Scene

More than anything else in Breaking Dawn, the birth scene is a tough sell in PG-13. It will be hard to get across just how painful Bella's birth and subsequent transformation are without showing at least a little of the extensive gore in chapters 17 and 18.

At the end of Chapter 17, Jacob describes the "ripping sound" he hears as Bella prepares to give birth. Things go downhill from there.
...Bella screamed.

It was not just a scream, it was a blood curdling shriek of agony. The horrifying sound cut off with a gurgle, and her eyes rolled back into her head. Her body twitched, arched in Rosalie's arms, and then Bella vomited a fountain of blood.

It's hard to get Kristen Stewart to go all Exorcist in PG-13, but it gets much worse as Jacob literally compares the amount of blood in the room to "a bucket being turned over, a faucet twisted to full."

And of course there's the actual delivery of the baby, which is only made possible by Edward's steely fangs.

The next sound jolted through me, unexpected, terrifying. Like metal being shredded apart. (...) I glanced over to see Edward's face pressed against the bulge. Vampire teeth -- a surefire way to cut through vampire skin.
Ch. 18, pg.351-352

4. Bella Goes Hunting

OK, so you can definitely kill a mountain lion in PG-13, but to be faithful to the book, Kristen Stewart would really have to go after this thing. PETA would likely have words for her.

My teeth unerringly sought his throat, and his instinctive resistance was pitifully feeble against my strength. (...)

It was effortless as biting into butter. My teeth were steel razors; they cut through the fur and fat and sinews like they weren't there.

The flavor was wrong, but the blood was hot and wet and it soothed the ragged, itching thirst as I drank in an eager rush. The cat's struggles grew more and more feeble, and his screams choked off with a gurgle.

5. Strange Love

Stephenie Meyer leaves some wiggle room as to what exactly it means for a werewolf to "imprint" on someone. But there's no way around the fact that it's straight up creepy when Jacob imprints on Bella and Edward's new-born daughter, Renesmee.

The whole thing is made even weirder (even at PG-13) when Edward basically calls Jacob his future son-in-law near the end of the book, when Renesmee is at roughly the same maturity level as a seven-year-old.

Edward leaned his head against the same shoulder where he'd placed Renesmee. "Goodbye, Jacob, my brother ... my son."

Nikki Reed Confirms Honeymoon Scene for Breaking Dawn

Nikki Reed confirms today that the honeymoon scene for Breaking Dawn will be shot on location in South America!! Have they found the real life Isle of Esme? It seems that Bill Condon is keeping pretty true to the book if they are heading to the warm climates of Brazil.

“They are filming a few days [in South America], but I’m not there,” the 22-year-old actress confirmed to HollywoodLife.com exclusively at the LA premiere of her new film, Last Day of Summer, Sept. 22. “It’s Bella and Edward’s honeymoon.”

“Twilight Breaking Dawn” Will Not Be Shot In 3D

Summit Entertainment, the studio in charge of the massively popular “Twilight” vampire saga has announced that the two part finale “Breaking Dawn” will not be shot in 3D. The stars of the film have mixed opinions on the matter.

Kristen Stewart felt that shooting the films in 3D would offer viewers the chance to see the world through the eyes of a vampire and open up the story more to the audience. Taylor Lautner on the other hand felt that a cautious approach should be adopted. He felt 3D shouldn’t be widely applied to all films and should help bring a story to life.

Despite other studios and filmmakers rushing to film everything in 3D to meet the demand of the recent craze, Summit has chosen not to shoot the two part finale using 3D cameras. The studio has not however ruled out converting the project to 3D in post-production.

They are looking for a 4 year old Caucasian girl who has some acting experience and is confident on a film set environment. This girl should have self-composure, good physical posture, and be very attentive, able to take direction well, and be quick to react. They also would prefer a girl with dance training.

Will Bella and Edward's Honeymoon in Brazil be "Overly Hot"?

It seems that the Twilight makers have decided to make the upcoming film of the superhit vampire saga extremely hot and even more overtly sexual than previous editions, with Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart set to be sent to an island of Brazil to shoot the honeymoon scene for Breaking Dawn, the next installment of the series. Twilight co-star Nikki Reed announced the destination of the honeymoon.

No sooner Reed broke the news, the speculations and talks about the filming of the honeymoon started doing the rounds of internet, with many places being named, such as Vancouver, Louisiana, and Brazil. Meanwhile, Breaking Dawn director said that he would remain faithful to the book by Stephanie Myers and shoot the honeymoon sequence in Brazil.

“They are filming a few days [in South America], but I’m not there. It’s Bella and Edward’s honeymoon,” the 22-year-old Reed said to HollywoodLife.com. She talked to the celebrity gossip site exclusively at the LA premiere of her new film, Last Day of Summer, September 22.

If the director will remain faithful to the book then we will see Edward not being able to control himself and he will unleash his inner sexual demons and lust. The decision to make Breaking Dawn hot and sexy is rather interesting because the Twilight sag is a phenomenon among the young tweens and too much sexual scenes does seem rather inappropriate for their age group. So keep your fingers and wait for the release of the film to judge for yourself whether it is overtly hot or the hype is not for real.

Breaking Dawn Birth Scene: "I Love the Way They're Showing It," Says Kellan Lutz

Let the countdown begin. Cameras are pretty close to rolling on Breaking Dawn.

"We start sometime in October and go all the way through to late April," Kellan Lutz says. "I just did a [wardrobe fitting] and a contact lenses test."

As for that much anticipated, hard-to-imagine birthing scene...

Lutz cracked, "I think they should show it and have Emmett in the background laughing."

Joking aside, Lutz says he knows what director Bill Condon has planned for the potentially gory sequence. "I love the way that they're showing it," he said. "I really thought that was going to be really a tough thing to show."

Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg recently told us the birth of baby Renesmee won't necessarily be gruesome. "I don't think it's about the amount of blood you show," she said. "It's about the intensity of it. It's on their faces. It's all from Bella's point of view when you're seeing what's going. It should feel visceral. I think it's going to be pretty intense."

'Breaking Dawn' Casting News: Meet Irina!

EXCLUSIVE: Maggie Grace will play a new vampire threat to Kristin Stewart's Bella in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Grace, who played Liam Neeson's in-distress daughter in Taken, will play the role of Irina in the final installments of the Stephenie Meyer novel, which director Bill Condon is directing in two separate films.

Irina is a member of the Denali coven, considered cousins to the Cullen clan as the only other "vegetarian" vampire group. When Irina blames the Cullens for the death of her lover, her actions set in motion a terrifying chain of events. The first of two pictures will be released by Summit Entertainment on November 18, 2011, followed by the finale on November 16, 2012.

Has it really been five months (and a day) since my last dispatch? In my defense, they've been five months spent immersed in the world of TWILIGHT - something I'm sure you can all appreciate. We're in the thick of pre-production now, juggling everything from casting to storyboarding to location scouting, getting it all ready to go, but I do want to take a moment to announce to you exclusively a few of the amazing production team members who are hard at work alongside me, bringing these movies to life. I hope you'll be as excited about them as I am:

Guillermo Navarro, who won an Academy Award for the beautiful PAN'S LABYRINTH, is our cinematographer. Guillermo and I have been painstakingly planning each shot, with a team of very talented storyboard artists.

Michael Wilkinson, our costume designer, is bringing his brilliant vision to the styles of all your favorite characters. Michael's created fantastic looks for 300, WATCHMEN, and the upcoming TRON: LEGACY - just wait 'til you see his take on the vampire witnesses who come to Forks from around the globe.

Jean Black, our makeup designer, has worked extensively with the Coen Brothers and David Fincher, most recently making exquisite, award-winning contributions to THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON. I'm honored to be working with her.

Richard Sherman, with whom I made GODS AND MONSTERS and KINSEY, is on-board as our production designer. Richard's one of my oldest collaborators and a terrific designer, and you may be interested to know that he also happens to be a lifelong vampire aficionado.

Our Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor John Bruno has been responsible for some of the most memorable special effects ever, with his groundbreaking work on display in everything from POLTERGEIST to AVATAR. He and his team are working intensely to develop solutions to the host of special effects challenges that Stephenie created for us in BREAKING DAWN, including that remarkable kid...

Wonderful, imaginative people all and very exciting, intense times for us. W Przed Świtem Bella i Edward udają się na miesiąc miodowy. Spędzają go na Wyspie Esme. Prawdopodobnie za wyspę Esme będzie robić właśnie ta wyspa w Brazylii. Sam reżyser powiedział: "Będziemy kręcić to w Rio de Janeiro lub okolicach."

Breaking Dawn – prace ruszają za tydzień!

Podobno ”Breaking Dawn” ma mieć dwa plany zdjęciowe. Sceny kręcone wewnątrz budynku będę robione w Vancouver, zaś wszytkie z zewnątrz w Luizjanie. Miesiąc miodowy ma być nakręcony na jednej z wysp w Rio de Janerio. Nikki Reed zdradziła, że zdjęcia ruszą za tydzień!

Co dalej z Renesmee Cullen?

Strona fanów Mackenzie Foy (zagra Renesmee Cullen) dzieli się informacjami dotyczącymi jej udziału w Breaking Dawn. Strona podaje, że „anonimowe źródło” wyjaśniło jak Mackenzie zagra dziecko kilka lat młodsze niż jest naprawdę. Otóż reżyser Breaking Dawn, Bill Condon specjalnie dla małej Renesmee ściągnął do załogi Davida Finchera, który pracował przy „The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. Twarz Mackenzie byłaby cyfrowo przeniesiona na twarz młodszego dziecka. Jest również prawdopodobne, że studio zatrudni młodsze dziecko w pewnym stopniu podobne do Mackenzie.

Nikki Reed o relacjach Jacoba&Rosalie!
Już wkrótce zaczynają się zdjęcia do Przed Świtem. W jednym z wywiadów Nikki Reed opowiedziała trochę o Przed Świtem, m.in. o relacjach pomiędzy Rosalie i Jacobem.
"Już wkrótce zaczynamy kręcić, a dopiero kilka dni temu dostałam scenariusz, więc to ekscytujące." - mówi Nikki. "Film naprawdę uchwyci historię książki, scenariusz jest bardzo wierny powieści, więc myślę, że studio, jak i aktorzy i pisarze chcą, aby to odniosło sukces jak książka Stephenie Mayer. Bylibyśmy głupi robiąc coś odległego od tej historii."
O relacjach Rosalie i Jacoba:
"Muszę powiedzieć, że w Przed Świtem Rosalie i Jacob mają specjalny... ich relacje są wyjątkowe." - mówi Reed uśmiechając się. "(Fani książki wiedzą jak konflikt Rosalie i Jacoba podgrzewa temperaturę w scenach przed porodowych) To całkiem zabawne."

Renesmee przerobiona komputerowo
Wszyscy pamiętamy jak studio Summit nie widziało, czy znajdą odpowiednią dziewczynkę do roli Renesmee i w planach mieli nawet komputerowe obróbki. Teraz kiedy znaleźli dziewczynkę podobną do opisywanego dziecka Belli i Edwarda wszyscy myśleli, że obejdzie się bez większych zmian. Jednak przeróbka będzie potrzebna.
Na stronie Mackenzie Foy pojawiła się informacja:
Wiem, że zastanawiacie się jak Mackenzie zagra dziewczynkę kilka lat młodszą od siebie. Otóż zgodnie z nieznanymi źródłami: reżyser Bill Condon zatrudni specjalne efekty cyfrowe zrobione przez Davida Finchera w The Curious Case of Benjamin Button i twarz Mackenzie komputerowo będzie przerobiona na na twarz młodszego dziecka. Jednak nadal jest możliwość, że studio zatrudni młodszą dziewczynkę.

Plan w trakcie budowy
Podczas wywiadu z producentem Wyck Godfrey wyszła informacja, że zdjęcia do Przed Świtem odbędą się w Luizjanie i Vancouver. Niedawno jedna z aktorek w Braking Down, Nikki Reed powiedziała Hollywood Life, że ona zaczyna kręcenie "za nieco ponad tydzień". Wyszło potwierdzenie z dwóch różnych źródeł, że plan zdjęciowy jest właśnie budowany w Raleigh Studios at the Celtic Media Centre w Baton Rouge, wkluczając w to dom Edwarda. Doniesiono, że sceny wewnętrzne będą kręcone na planie w Luizjanie, a sceny z fasadą budynku będą nakręcane w Vancover.
