Calling all Vampire Diaries fans! The Gulf oil spill is something that has had a tragic impact on everyone in one way or another. Those fine ladies over at Vampire Support and Vampire Stalkers want to hear about your thoughts on the disaster in the form of an essay, and the winning essay writer will receive their choice of a vampire support t-shirt and a feature on the aforementioned websites. In their own words:
Cytat: |
We are looking for someone to write a short essay on their feelings about the oil spill in the gulf. Although a lot of us don’t live on the coast, the effect of this has gone worldwide. Vampire Support has shown us we can all make a difference. In your words, tell us what YOU think can be done to help the situation in the gulf and to make a permanent change for the future. Give us your ideas along with your experiences in how this has affected you or someone you know personally. Don’t hold back, we really want to hear how you feel! |
The contest is open until noon, September 3rd and, yes, this one is open to international fans, too. :) Head over to the Vampire Stalkers website for more details and instructions for submitting your entry.

E!Online caught up with Vampire Diaries guest star Courtney Ford at Showtime’s pre-Emmy party last night and she had some interesting things to say about her role as a Duke grad student who helps Alaric, Damon, and Elena sort through Isobel’s supernatural research. But this is Vampire Diaries, so that can’t be all there is, right?
Cytat: |
When we asked Courtney whether Vanessa would see any action in the romance department, her reaction revealed that she’s obviously hooking up with someone…but Courtney’s lips are sealed: “I want to tell you so much, but I can’t,” she said, laughing. “They’ll kill me if I reveal too much!” |
Let the speculation begin! Ms. Ford makes her first appearance in episode 203, Bad Moon Rising. READ THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW AT E!ONLINE.

Canada’s Sherwood Park News has an interesting interview with Sara Canning – she talks about being recognized because of Vampire Diaries, the audience, the awards, and what she believes is the most important aspect of Jenna’s character:
Cytat: |
“I’m often asked when will Jenna find out that there are vampires where they’re living, or that vampires exist, and I actually don’t think it’s going to happen anytime soon,” Canning said. “I think one of the most important aspects of Jenna’s character is that she’s one of the few that are left in Mystic Falls (Virginia) that are actually left completely grounded in reality.” |
The supernatural may continue to elude Jenna, but can the woman find a decent guy already? (And yes, there is Alaric, but don’t you think Damon will get jealous? We kid – kinda.) READ THE ENTIRE INTERVIEW AT SHERWOOD PARK NEWS.

Ach xD

Edward who? The CW whipped together a cheeky Damon Salvatore promo to celebrate him being crowned Entertainment Weekly’s Ultimate Sexy Beast. Just over a week until The Vampire Diaries returns on September 9th!
klik
Countdown to The Return is a series of guest posts by Vampire Diaries fans on topics they’re pondering as we head into Season 2. Blogger Erin Brown is having a fangirl crisis and a certain Lockwood’s animal magnetism is to blame.
For the record, I’m a Stefan girl; I’ve always been a Stefan girl.
I’d like to blame David Boreanaz for all of this, of course – Angel/Angelus, aka the Original Captain Brood – for instilling my love of a tortured expression on a handsome face, but in truth, I’ve always loved a good moper with supernatural abilities and chiseled features; one who is ever-searching for his redemption by playing the good guy and being the better man…or at least an undead version of.
Paul Wesley, playing Stefan Salvatore, of course filled all of these expectations. The eyes, the abs, the forehead that has more acting skills than all the Baldwin brothers put together (what are there, like a million? Forgive me, but I lost count at William) and the smouldering, bruised expression? If we were going on stereotypes, it made more sense than chocolate and peanut butter: Stefan Salvatore had me well before hello.
But as the premiere of the next chapter in Mystic Falls history draws nigh, I find myself needing to make a confession.
It’s the eve of a new season and I am being seriously courted by another team.
Yes.
I’m looking at YOU, Tyler Lockwood. With your cougar-loving, bad boy, my-daddy-issues-have-issues ways, and anti-emo-Jeremyness…ness.
Me, President of Planet Stefan…I was fine – for months – until you showed up on my radar and went all interesting. Fair? Erm, no.
You see, Tyler is the perfect embodiment of that guy in high school that most every girl seems to have in her past, one that I definitely know I have in mine: the handsome but holy-toledo-you’re-an-ass football jock that we never really liked but always sort of felt we understood.
And Tyler was that jock to a T. Nothing more.
That was, of course, until the Season 1 finale.
In one hit, a device triggers his were-senses with a reaction you nigh on needed a Richter scale to measure, he gets in a road accident as a result, his estranged best friend’s girl almost dies because of it, and his dad bites the big one courtesy of a vamp in a fiery basement.
Cue Tyler Lockwood, Mark II – from one-dimensional douche to Onion Man; he of the fifteen layers of tear inducing issues, a tiramisu of angst. I was not prepared for this! To all of a sudden care more about what happens to you! This was not in the plan!
But between his supernatural heritage and new capabilities, his storyline, for me, is now one of the biggest hooks of Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries, as it charges forward into new territory on our screens in a little less than two weeks.
Unlike Stefan and Damon, who have never been in any doubt about whom or what they are – be it human or vampire – Tyler’s journey into becoming a werewolf is an entirely different one altogether. Katherine prepared the brothers for ages [well, one of them, at least - Vee] before she turned them, but from what we’ve seen so far, Tyler has had no such foreknowledge to work with. He has to relearn everything about himself and the person he thought he was, from the ground up.
In the context of Season 2, this opens up an innumerable list of delicious possibilities. One hand, of course, you have Katherine. Now that she has turned the Stefan-Elena-Damon love triangle well and truly into a square, whatever their storyline this season, we know it will be about them dealing with each other in one bloody, angsty, sexy way or another, even if we don’t know how that will all play out.
On the other hand, the beauty of Tyler’s plot line – courtesy of the exceptional proficiency for character development by the creative team behind show – is that it could go absolutely anywhere. Couple this with the willingness of Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson to take a decent amount of creative license with L.J. Smith’s original stories, and you have pretty much endless potential.
There are so many questions to be answered.
How will he deal with his new physical capabilities? How will he physically turn into a werewolf? Will he explode out of his skin? Develop a case of Insta-Fur every time he sees a full moon rising? Who will he confide in? What will their reaction be? Will he finally get kissed by someone who’s not an alcoholic Mrs. Robinson or a drugged out high school girl? (PLEASE, you team of writing masterminds – for the love of ALL that’s CW, make it so. We’re dying here.) What happens to his friendship with Matt? Will the Salvatores find out about him? Will he have any memory of what he does as a werewolf? (Because seriously: have you noticed in almost every show with werewolves in the plot, 90 percent of them get post-puppy amnesia every time they revert back to human form?) Will he meet anyone else like him that’s not a relative? Speaking of which, the uncle addition – what’s he going to bring to the mix?
The beauty of Tyler Lockwood in Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries lies with the complete mystery that surrounds him and the otherworldly potential that lies within him. And, perhaps best of all, we learn about him as he learns about himself. He’s as in the dark as we are. What this bad boy discovers come September, who knows.
In any case, let’s just hope it involves as many full moons as possible.
Erin Brown hails from Sydney, Australia. When she’s not busy reading, working, tweeting or drinking (another) coffee, she spends as much time as possible doing what she loves best – writing. She likes stormy afternoons, Bruce Springsteen and refuses to discriminate between vampires solely on the basis of what happens to them in direct sunlight. Bling or toast, she loves both the most. |

Candice Accola o zmianie, jaka zaszła w Caroline
Cytat: |
Maiara Walsh dołącza do obsady serialu
Jak podaje TVGuide.com Maiara Walsh, która zagrała rozpuszczoną Anę w ostatnim sezonie Desperate Housewives dołączyła właśnie do obsady The Vampire Diaries.
Aktorce przypadła w udziale rola Sarah - licealistki, której wpadł w oko Jeremy. Dziewczyna zachęci go do imprezowania w rezydencji Lockwoodów.

The Toronto Sun has a brief chat with Candice Accola in anticipation of Vampire Diaries’ return on Sept. 9. She talks about the growth of Caroline Forbes as a character and what she’s meant to represent within the show, as well as what’s in store for Caroline in Season 2:
Cytat: |
“In season two, there are some awesome plot lines, the audience is going to be so excited,” Accola said. “For Caroline, she’s searching to figure out who she is and where she fits, in this town and in everyone’s life. And there are some obstacles thrown in front of her.” |
Early in The Vampire Diaries, Caroline was the bitch. There’s no other way to put it. But as the rookie season progressed, something interesting happened with Caroline, who is played by Candice Accola.
Over time, Caroline became a three-dimensional, even sympathetic character. When she behaved in a bitchy way, viewers started to feel sorry for her, rather than despising her.
We have to assume the writers on The Vampire Diaries saw something in Accola that allowed this gradual transformation to occur.
“Well, thank you so much, first and foremost,” said Accola, who is back with all the main cast members for the second season of The Vampire Diaries, beginning Thursday, Sept. 9 on CW and A. “To start the story it had to be pretty simple, but as the season unfolded the layers came out.”
Accola, 23, said she thought back to her own high school days when endeavouring to get inside Caroline’s head.
“Everyone knows girls who are like Caroline was when we met her in the pilot,” Accola said. “But with people like that, it usually is coming from an insecure, defensive place. “You try to belittle someone else to make yourself feel better. Even the nicest of the nice with the biggest hearts, we all have a little bit of that in us. It’s a very human characteristic.”
But Caroline is integral to The Vampire Diaries not only for her emotional humanity, but also for her physical humanity.
“Especially with all the supernatural elements of the show, my interpretation of what the writers did with Caroline was to give the audience someone to relate to in a very human way,” Accola said.
“So I don’t know what the writers initially intended, but it was lovely to go on that journey. And it definitely reminded me of my own experiences as a high schooler, foot in mouth, not knowing who you are and trying to be someone. You know everything that you don’t want, but it’s hard to find what you do want. Even as a young woman in my 20s, there’s a lot of relatability to that.”
Notwithstanding some previous episodic work, the role of Caroline on The Vampire Diaries represents Accola’s first full-time gig on a TV show. While learning a lot about the craft as she goes along, Accola also appreciates that she just happens to be on a show that has achieved the rare combination of good ratings and critical success.
“In season two, there are some awesome plot lines, the audience is going to be so excited,” Accola said. “For Caroline, she’s searching to figure out who she is and where she fits, in this town and in everyone’s life. And there are some obstacles thrown in front of her.
“What’s funny about this show is, everyone was either quick to jump on board or quick to write it off, because it fed into the pop-culture phenomenon that is vampires right now. But it’s not just about vampires. I’ve been stopped more by adults than by younger peers or teens.”
***
Entertainment Weekly’s Ken Tucker has seen The Return – the premiere episode of Vampire Diaries Season 2 – and his score is a solid B+, with a special comment on Taylor Kinney’s Mason Lockwood. WARNING: Vague spoilers, but spoilers just the same! You have been warned.
Cytat: |
But the throbbing red heart of The Vampire Diaries remains the tension between Damon and Paul Wesley’s Stefan, and their mutual attraction to whomever Dobrev is embodying at the time. ”She’s Katherine! She loves to play games!” splutters Damon in the season opener. It’s not long after this that she plays a romantic game with him that will doubtless have reverberations throughout the season. As Katherine says: ”Game on.” |
The second-season premiere of The Vampire Diaries proves once again why this series is one of prime time's more cleverly constructed, well-acted nighttime soap operas. After last season's finger-chopping cliff-hanger, we get neck snappings, a smothering, an unlikely alliance between two warring brothers, and the line ''Kiss me or kill me!'' Oh, and as Ian Somerhalder's Damon adds, ''Doppelgänger high jinks ensue.''
He's referring, of course, to Nina Dobrev's Elena/Katherine, the series' yin and yang of good and evil, purity and villainy. Dobrev has really risen to the challenge of portraying these two, managing to confuse viewers as to who's who when Katherine wants to impersonate Elena for some mischief.
This season hauls in Taylor Kinney as Mason, the ''black sheep'' brother of the late Mayor Lockwood. Mason has a nice swagger, and it looks like he'll take up any slack that might have occurred with the death of the Mystic Falls mayor.

Recenzja 2x01 - The Return
Ken Tucker z EW.com otrzymał możliwość obejrzenia pierwszego odcinka drugiego sezonu zatytułowanego "The Return".
"To Katherine. Ona kocha grać w gierki!" - wyrzuca z siebie Damon w odcinku premierowym.

Cóż, to definitywnie redukuje listę możliwych postaci. |

Zabijecie mnie
Now, you guys don’t need me to review the TV series. All you have to do is look around this website to find out all you need to know about the show, and just how fantastic we think it is. If you haven’t seen it, then watch it. Now. That’s an order. Trust me, you’ll thank us for it. So assuming you’re all fans, you’re here to find out about the DVD; what the set looks like, what special features there are, how good they are, and just what Vee wore for her DVD interview (a fetching rust-brown jacket and an amber pendant that puts Bonnie’s to shame, just so you know).
When I initially saw the proposed cover for the DVD, I was a little disappointed at the use of an image that had been used in so much advertising already. I’ve had time to get over that, and while it may be overused, it is at least symbolic of the show. The rest of the artwork on this DVD set is pretty fantastic, though, with illustrations of scroll work, vines and crows on the the spine, top and back of the cardboard sleeve. There’s also a movie poster-type image of the main trio on the back of the plastic DVD case.
I have to say that I’m impressed with how economical this packaging is. It’s got five discs packed into a standard DVD case (six in the case of the Target DVDs with the bonus Paley disc). It has everything you need without wasting materials like a lot of DVD box sets have a tendency to do. The Vampire Diaries set is going green, and it’s fantastic to see that the WB have produced a DVD set that fits with that ethos.
Vee Note: The Target edition of the DVD is thicker than the regular release, but not by much. If you bought Season 4 of Supernatural, you’ll know the size.
The set also comes with a booklet that amounts to a useful episode list with promos and episode stills. A typo of ‘Stephan’ in place of ‘Stefan’ under the Blood Brothers synopsis had me reaching for a pile of sticky notes, but – just this once – I’ll let them off that on account of attention to detail on the rest of the packaging.
Vee Note: My release does not have the dreaded ‘Stephan” error, but does have a giggle-worthy ‘Mystic River’ in place of ‘Mystic Falls’ under the There Goes the Neighborhood synopsis.
Menus
These are a simple affair, and not at all flashy. The main menu uses the same image from the cover of the DVD, with the sub menus using various promotional stills. While it might have been nice to see a little more effort with jazzing up the art work (some of the scroll work from the cover, perhaps), it’s worth trading that off for simple menus that do what they need to rather than flashy menus that are a pain to navigate. It would have been nice to have seen the episode titles along with numbers on the menus, to make finding a particular episode a little easier to do at a glance. A big bonus is the original score by Michael Suby has been featured as the background music on the menus. While this music is going to be released on the soundtrack in October, there are plenty of fans who will be happy to hear the tracks in full in this way until then.
It’s also extremely heartening to find that English subtitles for the hard of hearing are included – a feature that can often be annoyingly overlooked on many DVDs. Not only that, but these subtitles extend to the special features, which is something that is sadly more often missing on DVDs than not. Kudos to the WB. Other subtitled languages on the UK/R2 DVDs include Dutch, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish. The North American/R1 DVDs have English, Spanish, French, Korean, Portuguese, Thai and Chinese Traditional subtitles, along with a Portuguese audio track.
Sound & Video
I don’t have a fancy television or sound system, so I can’t tell you how the quality of this set is when you bung it on your home theatre system with your surround sound immersing you in the awesome soundtrack, and every neck snap, slurp, and sarcastic quip Damon makes on his way through Mystic Falls. However, I can say that the sound and video on both my laptop and non-fancy TV are fabulous.
Special Features
To be perfectly honest, I think many fans would have been satisfied with even half the amount of special features on this set. I feel almost spoiled with the amount there is, with videos featuring the producers, actors, fans and guest specialists. There is so much love and detail gone into these extras, and they have a warm, cosy and personal feel to them, welcoming you into the Vampire Diaries family. Huge credit to Retrofit for making all of this look so great.
Commentary: This was actually very disappointing, for one reason; there’s only commentary on the Pilot episode. This is not to say that it’s bad commentary – on the contrary, it’s excellent stuff. Julie Plec, Kevin Williamson and Marcos Siega talk us through that first episode with insight, humour, an obvious ease with one another, and love and affection for this series. Like with a lot of the things we hear from the set, you really are left with the impression that this is a group of people who have come together as a family on this project. This is the stuff that audio commentary on TV episodes should be like. But many fans – myself included – were hoping for more, with varying cast members on different episodes. Fingers crossed for the season 2 DVD set, eh, guys?
Deleted Scenes: Rather than being incorporated into the episode, these are an extra menu item next to the episode they’re from, and it’s easy enough to guess where in the episode they came from. Many clips are nice little extended scenes that don’t reveal anything new, but are nice to see. Others are awesome, giving us more insight into some characters and relationships, and it was a shame they weren’t in the show. There’s a compelling scene between Harper and Stefan in Let the Right One In, in which Stefan explains why he doesn’t feed on humans. Others scenes caused my brain to explode from unexpected revelations. In A Few Good Men we have a fantastic scene with Kelly Donovan that adds a whole new angle to her story, and goes a long way towards explaining much about Vicki Donovan’s own troubled personality.
Vee Note: As awesome as these deleted scenes are, they are also all attached to the wrong episode and I have a theory as to how this happened. Judging from comments on Twitter, a lot of fans have figured out that the deleted scenes are off by one episode, showing up on the episode previous to the one it is actually from. I think the production numbers are to blame. As anyone who’s followed details of the show knows, the Pilot was considered episode 100 in the production timeline, while Night of the Comet (EP02) was 101, Friday Night Bites (EP03) was 102, and so on. I think this comes down to simple confusion about episode numbers vs. production numbers. Once it clicked, I became amused at the mistake because it haunted us all during Season 1. So this is classic Vampire Diaries. Here’s a list of which deleted scene is from which episode, just in case anyone’s confused:
Night of the Comet: Deleted scene is from Friday Night Bites
You’re Undead to Me: Deleted scene is from Lost Girls
Lost Girls: Deleted scenes are from Haunted
Haunted: Deleted scene is from 162 Candles
The Turning Point: Three deleted scenes are from Bloodlines
Fool Me Once: Deleted scenes are from A Few Good Men
A Few Good Men: Deleted scene is from There Goes the Neighborhood
There Goes the Neighborhood: Deleted scenes are from Let the Right One In
Let the Right One In: Deleted scene is from Under Control
Into Mystic Falls: This is a nice, in-depth look at how the series was created and evolved into the show we know and love. There’s a whole lot of stuff packed into this, going into details about the things we’d already heard about – such as the changes from book to screen and how Kevin and Julie became involved – but also delving into the things we’ve not heard about, such as what it was that drew Marcos Siega to be involved in the project, and details Paul M. Sommers’ approach to lighting the show in a distinctive manner as Director of Photography. The familiar details are neatly woven in with all the new things, making this a feature that keeps your attention even when you’re aware of the facts.
When Vampires Don’t Suck: First, let’s get the obvious out of the way. OMGWTFBBQ!!! They featured Vampire-Diaries.net! That was one of the most amazing feelings I have experienced in my life, seeing the website that Vee and I worked so hard to create being featured like that. Thank you to everyone over at the Vampire Diaries and Retrofit for doing that for us. We are truly touched.
Now that’s out of the way…
There are quite a few things covered in this section, with interviews from the usual suspects (cast and crew), along with Zap2It’s Carina MacKenzie and our very own Vee. The myth of the vampire in folklore and on the screen, and just why it is that people are so attracted to them these days, is explored by the cast, producers and guest experts on the subject, which then segues onto the popularity of the show, and the fans and fandom. None of this is exactly news to fans of the show, but it’s great to see it documented in the special features, and you can’t help but get drawn in to the enthusiasm of the fans from the Hot Topic events.
A New Breed of Vampire: When they were casting for the roles back in February 2009, we saw a lot of casting videos going up on YouTube. They were a little embarrassing, to put it politely, and so I wasn’t entirely sure what the videos for the final cast would be like. It’s actually a revelation to see these videos, firstly because this is what decent casting videos are like, and secondly because you can see why it was exactly these cast members were chosen. Very much worth watching for more insight into the show and into the casting process.
Vampires 101: A nice little feature that covers the basics of the vampire lore in the Vampire Diaries in the form of a pop quiz. Bonus points for the use of Mr. Tanner and Alaric in their teaching roles to add a little humour into the mix.
A Darker Truth: This was a bit of silly fun to build up a bit of anticipation in the run up to the premiere of season one. It’s not exciting on its own as I’m sure most of us have seen the videos online already. But it adds a nice historical completeness to the DVD, and it’s nice to see it in higher quality than was available on the internet.
A Second Bite: I have a weakness for bloopers and gag reels. If such a thing is missing from a DVD, I am heartbroken. Well, maybe not quite that bad, but I can work up a good sulk about it. The WB released a section of the blooper reel a few weeks back, and as funny as that was? They saved the best stuff for the DVD itself. Falling over backwards in her hoop skirt wasn’t the only thing that Nina got up to while playing Katherine, and I just hope that statue was a prop and not an actual garden ornament…
The Awakening audio book: It’s a nice touch to see the books represented on this DVD set. I don’t think it would have been taken amiss if it wasn’t included, as the books are mentioned quite a bit in the special features already. But as a book fan, I do appreciate that little extra to show where the TV series originated from. Personally I’m not a fan of audiobooks, but from what I heard when I was playing with the feature, it’s actually a well-read telling of the first book of the Vampire Diaries. Top job, Rebecca Mozo.
Vee Note: Target PaleyFest bonus disc – Props to Warner Bros. for not going cheap and having Target throw some b.s. extra disc in a sleeve. The Paley bonus is in the set and has the same artwork as the rest of the discs. The feature is oddly edited – and starts off saying this panel was at the New York PaleyFest when it was actually in Los Angeles – but, overall, it’s a fantastic addition to a set that’s already loaded with awesome features. In fact, I’m a little sad that this wasn’t included as a standard feature as the event highlights how funny and relaxed the producers and cast are, and especially since it’s so at odds with a lot of the standard sit down interviews you see with Ian, Nina, and Paul (you know, those ones where they’re answering the same questions as the ten previous interviews). It’s spontaneous, it’s funny, and it’s a fantastic showcase of everyone’s chemistry.
Despite some minor niggles, this is a great DVD set that all Vampire Diaries fans will love to own. It’s out now in the USA, Canada, UK and Australia, and can be ordered online from Amazon and other retailers.
And Vampire Diaries fans across the land gave each other hi-fives. Except John, of course. What else can we say about Founder’s Day as it puts the capper on the CW’s Season 1 encore run? How about this: BRING ON THE RETURN! Vampire Diaries Season 2 kicks off next Thursday, Sept. 9th at 8/7c. Now’s time to lend that Vampire Diaries S1 DVD to friends and spread the word that our show is back with a vengeance. Want a goal? See if the Season 2 premiere can’t blow the series premiere ratings outta the water.
***
Countdown to The Return is a series of guest posts by Vampire Diaries fans on topics they’re pondering as we head into Season 2. Blogger Lee MacOdrum looks at the history of werewolves in folklore and pop culture and ponders how Vampire Diaries will make its mark in lycanthrope legend.
In folklore, we know him as vaukalak, hombre lobo, lupo mannaro, loup-garou, lycanthropos. In pop culture, we know him as Lawrence Talbot, David Kessler, Will Randall, Lucian, Jacob Black, Alcide, George Sands. He is the lukos anthropos: the werewolf. And in a few short days, the names of Mason and Tyler Lockwood will be added to his legend. I can’t wait! Ever since Tyler’s wolf-tastic yellow eye peered up at that perplexed paramedic, this particular arc has had me on the edge of my seat in anticipation for Season Two to begin.
One of the things that initially drew me to The Vampire Diaries was the way in which the show’s writers cleverly combined traditional folklore and pop culture perceptions with a pinch of their own original spin to create the show’s vampire lore. Now they have the same opportunity with werewolves and I am stoked.
To date, we know our Lockwood lycanthropes will shift into “real wolf” forms (nod to folklore) and their change will be dependent on the full moon (nod to pop culture), but if the residents of Mystic Falls are going to make it out of this one alive (well, some of them anyway), two vital questions still need answering: How does one become a werewolf? And how does one kill a werewolf?
While we wait in fevered anticipation for The Vampire Diaries reveal, I thought it might be fun to take a quick look at how folklore and pop culture werewolf mythology has answered these questions before.
Let’s start with: how does one become a werewolf? According to folklore, a werewolf-wannabe has several popular options to choose from: donning a magic belt made of wolfskin, drinking an enchanted elixir, performing a ritual incantation, or rubbing one’s body with a magic salve of ingredients so shiver-worthy that I’m going to spare all our stomachs and not list them here. These methods often involve some sort of a deal with the Devil and folklore often attributes them to witchcraft and sorcery.
However, if black magic isn’t your cup of brew, fear not; the methods don’t stop there. You can also become a werewolf by sleeping outside on a designated summer night with the full moon in your face; drinking rainwater out of the footprint of a wolf; or drinking downstream where a wolf pack has drunk. Now these methods were for the wannabes; those that voluntarily become lycanthropes. But folklore also tells many tales of those who were forced to become werewolves – the involuntary lycanthropes, if you will. Being cursed by a priest, a witch, or a god; or being born on a full moon or a new moon was a common concept and of course there was always the hereditary quotient: if your parents were werewolves, guess what? Yes, Tyler Lockwood, I’m talking to you.
But wait! What about being bitten by a werewolf? That method, my little lupine fans, is where pop culture makes its mark on werewolf legend. From the original The Wolf Man to An American Werewolf in London to Harry Potter, the curse has been in the bite. In fact, it may surprise you to know that the idea of becoming a werewolf by surviving a bite from one is very rarely found in folklore at all.
Alright, now we know how one becomes a werewolf. But what if these lupine-lovelies get a little ruckus around town? Now we need to discuss: how does one kill a werewolf? Salvatore! Saltzman! Grab a pencil; Tyler, sorry dude, nothing personal. Now where were we? …Oh, right – ganking werewolves.
Folklore suggests one of the simplest, non-violent ways to defend oneself from werewolves is an herb called lycocotonum, better known as wolfsbane. Yes, for vampires it’s vervain; for werewolves, it’s wolfsbane. Cute. According to folklore, smelling, eating or wearing wolfsbane was fatal to a werewolf thus it was often planted around homes as a means of protecting against them. Coincidentally, wolfsbane is actually fatal to anyone who ingests it but that’s medieval ‘reasoning’ for you.
Wolfsbane not indigenous to your hometown? Again, fear not; plants are not your only option. You could always steal the werewolf’s magic wolfskin belt when he’s in human form. However, if you’re dealing with cursed, hereditary, or Devil-deal wolves, I’m afraid things are going to have to get a little messy. Decapitation or cutting out the heart of a werewolf were popular means of dispatching the troublesome stalkers; provided, of course, you manage to survive the subduing of the werewolf in the first place. To do that, according to folklore, almost any conventional weapon will do as long as it inflicts a fatal blow to the heart or brain. So don’t miss.
But wait! What about silver bullets? As with the bite factor, we can thank pop culture for this classic marker in the lore of the lycanthrope too. The werewolf’s vulnerability to silver is a popular weapon in modern tales: the vampires of Underworld couldn’t have tortured the Lycans so effectively without it; young Marty may never have bested Reverend Lowe without that trusty silver bullet in Stephen King’s aptly titled Silver Bullet; and can you imagine the havoc Karen White would have wreaked in that television studio and beyond in The Howling if Chris hadn’t dropped her with a silver shot? Actually, that might have been a better sequel. But I digress.
So now that we’ve taken a quick look at the popular perceptions of werewolf legend, which traditions from folklore and pop culture do you think the The Vampire Diaries writers will weave into Mystic Falls’ werewolf mythology? What new lore will they add to the legend of the lycanthrope? Were the Lockwoods cursed by a witch? Was it a bite that infected their patriarch and his progeny? If Mayor Lockwood had remembered his magic belt that fateful Founder’s Day, would he still be with us? And how will the human and vamp residents of our ill-fated town defend themselves against their new neighbours?
I know. I can’t wait either. Bring on September 9th and let the legend-making begin!
Lee MacOdrum, when not tweeting mayhem, defending Damon or plotting the next phase of her diabolical master plan, can usually be found writing, thinking about writing or dreaming about writing; drives her family nuts. She also has a profound penchant for Pink Floyd, red wine and supernatural folklore.

Fajne to najnowsze - rozszerzone - promo.
Ja go uwielbiam i zawsze mi się podoba ![Mr. Green](http://picsrv.fora.pl/images/smiles/icon_mrgreen.gif) |
